Our Relationships with our Pets

Maybe people see the best as well as the worst in themselves by observing animals.  Studying them at the zoo, in animal habitats, on You-Tube or even in our homes brings us knowledge about life itself. This is most likely why The Animal Planet channel has become so exceedingly popular.  Animal relationships appear to be as none other.  Animals mystify us:  they behave and communicate in what we feel to be strange ways. Yet we, most likely, behave strangely to them!  To look into their soulful eyes takes us to a different universe, one of beauty and depth. We wonder what goes on behind that mystifying animal façade.

Animals can also be our heroes.  Many a story of a brave and wonderful dog has evolved from the tragedy of 911.  With their steadfast sense of smell, dogs foray into a territory we can only dare to imagine as they forge ahead in desperate search and rescue ventures. They are irreplaceable police officers, often hurt or killed in the line of duty.  Canine officers can achieve what no human can.

As for cats, their mystery and relationship to humans is fascinating.  Our feline friends purr their way into our hearts.  No two cats are alike; some are skittish, some playful, and some are so mischievous they are utterly uncontrollable.  But we love them nonetheless!

Taking care of an animal is an immense responsibility.  Our creature entrusts its life to us.  An animal cannot cook, pour its own water, or even tell us when it is ill.  It is our responsibility to take careful care of that life form from the moment we own it until it leaves us for Rainbow Bridge.  Our time in-between together is beautiful, as we exist together every day, loving one another.
